How to Change Accent Color on Mac

You can change the accent color used in MacOS to adjust the display scheme better to suit your personal preferences.

Accent colors affect the highlight colors of menu items, files in the finder, buttons, and other interface elements, and you can choose from blue (default), purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, or gray.

How to Change Mac OS Accent Color

  1. Open the Apple menu and select “System Preferences”
  2. Select the “General” preference panel
  3. Look for “Accent color” and select the accent color you want to choose; blue, purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, gray1
  4. Close System Preferences when finished

Note that if you have many windows open, there are often delays and the Mac may crash when you change the accent color when taken throughout the interface.

Changing the accent color works whether your Mac is set to use the Light theme mode or is set to use the Dark Mode theme.

However, one interesting little-known trick is related to Dark Mode, and if you use a gray accent color in combination with Dark Mode, all of which eventually allows the darker version of the Dark Mode theme.

You can also change the highlight colors on Mac OS separately, which is another way to adjust the appearance of your computer.

The ability to change the accent color on MacOS requires modern versions of Mac OS, including Mojave 10.14.x and Catalina 10.15 and so on. In previous versions of Mac OS system software, you can still change the highlight color, which offers several UI adjustment components to match that color when highlighting text and data.
